It was a very good turn out for the Squad Training session, in spite of the heat wave and England having played in a World Cup match the day before!
For those who made it there was a new Shotokan kata learnt taken by Sensei Colin Smith and an excellent sparring session taking by Sensei Andy Major, Kumite Coach for the Ryoshin Association.
The Kata was taught by Sensei Colin Smith, who performed Gankaku, the equivalent to Wado Ryu's Wanshu. Whilst the moves appear similar, the fundamentals of stances made it very different to perform.
The second half of the session focused on kumite as taken by Te-Ashi-Do's Sensei Andy. Beginning by working on some combinations we then got to work on trying them out with various sparring partners.
The best thing about squad training courses is learning new things - whether it's a different style kata, or sparring with someone when you've no idea how good they are they are. It pushes your training a bit further.
So when the next one comes round and if you want to improve your karate, attend these training sessions. You never know what you may learn, whether it's a new kata or a note to yourself that you have to move your hands faster because you were caught unawares with a gyakazuki.
